My goal with fine art photography
is to show our everyday surroundings
in new and interesting ways and to capture what it feels like to
experience a place or a time. I also like to show ordinary objects in
ways people aren't used to seeing them; sometimes depicting them only
as abstract representations rather than literal portraits. I place very
strong emphasis on composition and design in all my photographs, often
creating images strictly for the visual beauty or interest of a
particular form, object, shadow or texture.
My art photography is almost all
shot on
film using traditional equipment
and methods then scanned to digital. After capture, my workflow is
entirely digital for the control, quality and flexibility modern
tools
allow. For art photography I prefer the aesthetic and visual tradition
that goes along with film, plus I like the quality and flexibility that
film capture still gives, especially with black and white. I also like
to follow the classical approach of creating the image I want in the
camera. For this reason I avoid
significant post-processing of my photographs, limiting my digital work
to what would have been possible in the traditional darkroom. My
commercial and commissioned work is done using either film or digital
capture, depending on the needs of the client.
My formal education in art and
photography was completed at the University at Buffalo, where I
received a Bachelors of Fine Art. I also hold a Masters in Product
Development
from Rochester Institute of Technology.
I have been an active photographer for over twenty years, and I am
a member of the
Professional Photographers of America (PPA).
